Description

The Colocasia Hilo Beauty is a special houseplant with a striking leaf pattern. This plant is often called Alocasia Hilo Beauty or Caladium Hilo Beauty, but it really belongs to the Colocasia species. The Colocasia Hilo Beauty has dark green leaves with striking, mint green spots. The leaf pattern is often compared to panther print.

Colocasias are native to subtropical regions in Asia. Just like the Alocasia and Caladium, Colocasias grow from tubers and the plants can grow up to two meters high! In Hawaii, Colocasias are produced commercially and then sold in Asian markets. Residents turn the tubers into a starchy paste called poi, which is then made into food. However, we do not recommend eating the plant, because it is too beautiful for that!

The Colocasia hibernates, which means that it will lose its leaves in the fall. But don’t worry: the plant will bloom again in the spring! Place the plant in a very bright spot with indirect sunlight. Keep the potting soil constantly slightly moist by watering the plant about 2 times a week. In winter, once a week is sufficient until all stems have died. After that you don’t have to water anymore; you won’t start again until the spring.
